HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol), this amazing semi-synthetic derivative of cannabis, has just been banned for sale and consumption. This decision has not hindered the emergence of new molecules with similar or similar effects which are already booming on merchant sites. “Goodbye HHC, hello THCV” is the already enticing slogan of online merchants who offer attractive discounts. “The next generation of the HHC is here! Check out the THCV and H4CBD at -30 %”, that's what they're touting.
The ban on HHC and the emergence of new molecules
HHC, as well as its derivatives, HHC-acetate (HHCO) and hexahydroxycannabiphorol (HHCP), were available over the counter in many specialty stores. However, they have been classified as narcotics by the National Agency for Safety and Medicines (ANSM) after studies showed that HHC presents a risk of abuse and dependence similar to that of cannabis. The agency highlights the similarity of the chemical structures of HHC and THC, a molecule itself already classified as a narcotic.
As soon as the ban was announced, the French CBD community was turned upside down. Professionals in this sector, authorized to market hemp-based products containing less than 0.3 % of THC, saw their activity put in difficulty by this decision. Consumers who had turned to this new substance to move away from illegal cannabis were also caught off guard.
It's downright intense for them The enthusiasm is such that many CBD stores were besieged on Monday afternoon, immediately after the Medicines Agency announcement. The managers of Vaporiz'me, a CBD store located in Rennes, were even forced to extend their opening hours in order to meet as many requests as possible, before having to abandon a whole series of very popular products. “The products have been removed from the store and deactivated on the website. We are going to suffer a loss on our stock, but that's the rule of the game”, explains Maxime, the director.

H4CBD: The potential successor to the HHC
Against this backdrop, some industry players believe that the ban on HHC will not prevent the emergence of other derivatives that take advantage of the legal uncertainty to take over. For example, H4CBD, PHC and THCP could well replace HHC. H4CBD, in particular, is already booming. Like HHC, the H4CBD is a semi-synthetic derivative of cannabidiol (CBD), a CBD molecule to which 4 hydrogen atoms have been added. Consumers report a heightened sense of well-being, combined with a slight psychoactive effect, without being as intense as that induced by THC.
H4CBD, unlike HHC, is a hydrogenated form of CBD, so its effects differ from those of HHC, which is a hydrogenated form of THC. In addition, a study by researcher Shimon Ben-Shabat of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev suggests that the molecule also has anti-inflammatory properties.
THC-V: Another alternative to HHC
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THC-V), a cannabinoid genetically very close to THC, is also presented as a new alternative to HHC. It would have psychotropic effects and would also have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is found in high quantities (4 to 5 %) in certain natural (non-hybrid) varieties of hemp and cannabis plants.

In summary
Despite the recent ban on HHC, other derivatives, such as H4CBD and THC-V, are already taking over. They offer similar effects and therefore represent alternatives for consumers and professionals in the sector. However, their legality remains in a gray area for the moment, which could lead to further regulatory developments. In the meantime, they continue to be promoted as the new stars of legal cannabis.
